Safari in Tanzania – a brief overview

Go on an unforgettable Safari Tour to the East African paradise with Tanzania Experts. Safari in the national language Kiswahili means nothing else than journey or travel. You will be picked up at the airport and go on safari in a well-kept and specially converted 4 × 4 off-road vehicle (Landrover Defender or Toyota Landcruiser). An excellent English speaking guide will drive you to national parks and conservation areas that you will remember for a lifetime.

With your Tanzania Safari expert at the wheel, you will set off in search of the “Big Five“: giant elephants, majestic lions, primeval rhinos, elegant leopards and the very dangerous African buffalo. The beauty of the endless savannahs of the Serengeti, the still active volcanoes of the Great Rift Valley and the unbelievable variety of rare birds will surely fascinate you. Of course you will also get in touch with the hospitable locals, with their very different cultures, traditions and languages. With its breathtaking range of wildlife and its many beautiful national parks and nature reserves, Tanzania was voted “best Safari destination” several times.

The “Northern Circuit” in Tanzania includes the national parks and reserves Arusha, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and the world famous Serengeti. The circuit offers visitors the opportunity to see unique fauna and flora with an almost unbelievable diversity with only one Safari Tour – and this at relatively short distances by African standards. Tanzania is also known as the traditional home of the Masai and as the cradle of mankind. The Olduvai Gorge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world and has proven invaluable for understanding early human evolution.

We encourage our Safari guests to try the local cuisine. The Swahili cuisine is influenced by African, Arab and Indian traditions and is therefore very diverse. Especially in the coastal regions and on the Zanzibar archipleago you should give fresh seafood a chance. The local beers are surprisingly good, in part due to the old German colonial history.

Adventurous and mountain lovers also have the opportunity to climb the famous Mount Kilimanjaro or the hardly visited but no less beautiful Mount Meru. Ol Doinyo Lengai, “Mountain of God” in the language of the Masai, is an active volcano near Lake Natron and also worth climbing but very challenging.

Those who are looking for sun, beach and relaxation after a exciting Safari adventure can visit the exotic Zanzibar Archipelago, a great island paradise whose rich cultural history is as fascinating as the remaining jungle and the beautiful beaches with finest sand on the warm Indian Ocean. The 3 Safari Circuits Tanzania

Northern Circuit: The best known and most visited safari circuit is characterized by its short distances, so all destinations are easily accessible by 4×4 Safari truck. This area offers among others the following attractions: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park. Also included in this Circuit is the famous Kilimanjaro National Park, with Uhuru Peak (5.895 m) as the highest point in Africa and its glittering glaciers.

Southern Circuit: Due to the vast size of the reserves, the distances between the individual parks and the generally poorer infrastructure, the Southern Circuit attracts significantly fewer travellers. Highlights of the Southern Circuit include the Ruaha, Mikumi, and Udzungwa Mountains National Park. The Selous Game Reserve with its 54,600 km² is the largest protected area in Africa and almost twice as large as Belgium. The lodges and camps in the south are more intimate and have a maximum of 30 rooms or tents.

Western Circuit: The course is hardly visited, because the areas are extremely remote. Normally a journey makes sense only by plane and boat. All three national parks in this western circuit offer the only safe opportunity in East Africa to observe chimpanzees in the wild. Both the Gombe Stream and the Mahale Mountains National Park are located on one of the cleanest lakes in the world, Lake Tanganyika. With a maximum of 1,470 metres, it is the second deepest in the world.
