The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has passed a long-awaited law that will ban plastic bags in Tanzania and introduce restrictions on certain plastic bottles as of June 1, 2019.

What does the new law mean for my visit to Tanzania?

Please make sure that you do not bring any of the following items with you when you enter Tanzania:

• Any kind of plastic bags for single use (also applies to plastic bags from duty free shops)
• All plastics used to seal your bags for your journey
• No plastic beverage containers (water bottles etc.)
• Plastic packaging for medical and sanitary products, industrial products, food, and garbage bags is still allowed

The fine for the possession of prohibited plastic bags is 30,000 TSH (approx. 14 USD).
